Johns Hopkins SAIS Global Risk Conference - The Janika Albers Memorial Roundtable in Political Risk
On November 24, 2011, Janika Albers, SAIS Alumna (Bologna 2006/Washington DC 2007) from Germany, passed away. She was a person of tremendous energy and determination, a dedicated member of the SAIS Europe community and a much-valued member of Oxford Analytica, the advisory firm where she had worked since completing her SAIS degree. Over the years she not only spearheaded a number of important projects, but also collaborated closely with other SAIS alumni and members of the faculty. Political Risk was one of Janika's strongest interests, and her Bologna Class of 2006, together with her family, decided to undertake the project that she was working on with Professor Erik Jones at the time of her passing, by establishing and financing the Janika Albers Memorial Lecture on Political Risk. This initiative will contribute to keeping Janika's presence alive at SAIS Europe. Janika's family express their gratitude for this endeavor to honor Janika's memory in perpetuity.

The Risk in International Political Economy Course and its relevant Lecture Series are supported by Mr. Robert S. Singer, Johns Hopkins University Alumnus and SAIS Europe Advisory Council Member. The series includes the Janika Albers Memorial Lecture on Political Risk, a yearly event in memory of our late SAIS Alumna, supported by the Janika Albers Memorial Fund established and financed by her family and her SAIS Europe Class of 2006. This event is part of the Johns Hopkins SAIS Global Risk Conference, made possible with the generous support of Mr. James K. STEPHANIE HARE
Stephanie Hare is a researcher focused on technology, politics and history. Selected for the Foreign Policy Interrupted Fellowship and the BBC Expert Women programme, she shares insights on television and radio and broadcasts on the BBC World Service and Radio 4. She has published in the Harvard Business Review, the Financial Times, Project Syndicate, the Herald, CNN and the Guardian. Previously she has worked as a principal director at Accenture Research, a strategist at Palantir, a senior analyst at Oxford Analytica, and a consultant at Accenture. Hare earned a PhD in International History and a MSc in Theory and History of International Relations from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Liberal Arts (French) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. PRESTON KEAT
Preston Keat is a managing director and head of political and country risk at UBS. In this role he oversees the bank's political and country risk team, which analyzes a broad range of economic and policy themes, coordinates country rating and exposure limits, and manages stress-scenario development. He also leads the firm's internal "Economist Forum" and "Risk Think Tank."Prior to joining UBS, Preston worked for ten years at the political risk consultancy, Eurasia Group, where he was a research director, head of the Europe practice, and a member of the management committee. At the German Marshall Fund of the US in Washington DC, he worked on the Fund's programs for political and economic development in Central and Eastern Europe. He has also taught a courses in political risk (Columbia), political economy, statistics and game theory (UCLA). He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and a B.A. from the College of William and Mary.
FRANCESCA PANELLI
Panelli is an economist with Rosa and Roubini Associates. Her main research interests are monetary and fiscal policy, global trade, labour markets and productivity trends. Previously, she was Head of Research for LCP Livingston Capital Partners, a multifamily office based in Switzerland, and was an International economy analyst with Oxford Analytica, United Kingdom. Panelli began her career in the asset management industry in Italy, where she held various positions within the Banco Popolare banking group, including that of Chief Economist for Aletti Gestielle. While in this role, she specialised in macroeconomic forecasting and received many Bloomberg awards as the most accurate forecaster of both US and Eurozone economic data. She was also a member of the US National Association of Business Economists. Panelli was an adjunct professor with LIUC University and regularly lectures at both under- and post-graduate university level. She holds a Master's degree in applied econometrics as well as a Bachelor's degree in economics, magna cum laude, from Pavia University. She also attended the CREI macroeconomics summer school at Pompeu Fabra University, and a specialisation course on FX at the Swiss Financial Institute.
JOHN RAINES
John Raines currently serves as the Head of Political Risk with IHS Markit, a global intelligence firm based in London. As IHS Markit's lead analyst for US foreign and domestic policy, he has appeared in numerous media outlets, including CNN, BBC, CNBC, the Washington Post, NPR and The Associated Press. Raines has previous work experience with the US Department of State, where he held positions responsible for conducting economic policy for the US Embassy in Panama and overseeing the American Citizen Services Unit in Hong Kong. He also worked at the World Bank, where he managed several projects in the production of the World Development Indicators (WDI). Raines has master's degrees in international relations and political science from Johns Hopkins University and Ohio State University respectively.
