Former Top IMF Official John Lipsky to Join JHU SAIS as Distinguished Visiting Scholar
Washington, D.C.—December 2, 2011— John Lipsky will join the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) as a distinguished visiting scholar as of January 1, 2012.
Lipsky served from September 2006 to August 2011 as the International Monetary Fund’s first deputy managing director—the organization’s No. 2 leadership role. Most recently, he was a special adviser to IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, helping to direct the fund’s preparations for last month’s G20 Leaders Summit in Cannes.
To be based at SAIS’s International Economics Program, Lipsky will engage as an active member of the school’s community of scholars through conducting research, teaching and organizing special programs with policymakers and other experts.
“John Lipsky’s service at the IMF coincided with the most challenging era for the international economy in the past 70 years,” said SAIS Dean Jessica P. Einhorn. “During this historic time, he was a dedicated and effective advocate for international cooperation and coordination to heal and restore the global economy. Over the course of his distinguished career in both the private and public sectors, he has earned the respect and regard of many leaders around the world. Prior to rejoining the IMF in 2006, Lipsky spent more than 20 years in the private sector, including serving as JP Morgan’s chief economist, Chase Manhattan Bank’s chief economist and director of research and Salomon Brothers Inc.’s chief economist. Before working on Wall Street, he was at the IMF for a decade, where he helped manage the fund’s exchange rate surveillance procedure and analyzed developments in the international capital market.
His current professional activities include serving on the board of directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research. A native of Iowa, Lipsky received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Wesleyan University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.
SAIS is one of the country’s leading graduate schools devoted to the study of international relations.
