Johns Hopkins SAIS’ Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy releases data platform for study of India’s rural energy access

The Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP) at Johns Hopkins SAIS, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore released datasets based on the Access to Clean Cooking Energy and Electricity – Survey of States (ACCESS) 2018, India’s largest multidimensional energy access survey, which was conducted across six of the major energy access-deprived states in the country. ACCESS 2018 revisits households surveyed in the initial study, ACCESS 2015, to assess energy availability in rural India and the effectiveness of government polices to improve energy access since the first report was completed.
The data platform based on ACCESS 2018 features data covering more than 9,000 households from 756 villages in 54 districts in which approximately 2.5 million data points were collected. Data from this study highlights complexities associated with electricity access, such as the duration of supply, quality, reliability, affordability, and even the legal status of electricity connections.
Johannes Urpelainen, ISEP’s founding director and director of the school’s Energy, Resources and Environment program, is available for interviews and background discussions on the data set and can address the following:
