SAIS Europe to host “A Green Recovery: Which World Do We Want After COVID-19?” webinar, featuring European Commission Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans on May 12

SAIS Europe will host “A Green Recovery: Which World Do We Want After COVID-19? A Dialogue with European Commission Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans” on Tuesday, May 12. This online dialog is part of a wider program of events, conferences, and cultural activites to celebrate SAIS Europe’s 65th anniversary.
 
During the event, Michael G. Plummer, director of SAIS Europe, will lead a discussion between Timmermans and SAIS Europe students focused on the prospects for a green recovery from the present crisis, strengthening democracy across Europe, and the question of what kind of world students can expect to live and work in after COVID-19.

About the Speaker

Frans Timmermans assumed the role of Executive Vice President of the European Commission for the European Green Deal in December 2019 following a five-year stint as First Vice President of the European Commission. As First Vice President, Timmermans oversaw Better Regulation, Inter-Institutional Relations, the Rule of Law, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Sustainability. Timmermans works closely with his eight fellow PES Commissioners and with the Socialist and Democrat MEPs in the European Parliament and the PES Prime Ministers in the European Council.
 
Timmermans was elected six times as a Member of the Dutch Parliament for the Partij van de Arbeid (Dutch Labour Party), serving from 1998 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2012. He served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands from 2012 to 2014 and Minister of European Affairs from 2007 to 2010.
 
Before entering politics, Timmermans worked first at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where we was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Dutch Embassy in Moscow in 1990, before returning to the Ministry in 1993. He then went on to work as Senior Advisor and Private Secretary to Max van der Stoel, the High Commissioner for National Minorities of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
