SAIS Hosted Forum on New Silk Road Strategy on September 29

Thomas Friedman, columnist for The New York Times, and Michael Mandelbaum, director of the SAIS American Foreign Policy Program, discussed their new book, That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back on Tuesday, September 27.

SAIS Hosted Conference on Women in the Boardroom on September 9

On Friday, September 9, SAIS hosted a daylong conference entitled, "Women in the Boardroom." Speakers included Johns Brock, chairman and CEO of Coca Cola Enterprises; Tim Armstrong, chairman and CEO of AOL, Inc., Mervyn Davies, former U.K. minister of State for Trade, Promotion and Investment; Nancy Kopp, treasurer of the state of Maryland; Jillian Segal, board member of the Australian Stock Exchange and Australia Bank; and Linda Tarr-Whelan, former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women.

EU Maritime and Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki Spoke at SAIS on September 8

Maria Damanaki, maritime and fisheries commissioner for the EU, spoke at SAIS about "EU Efforts to Combat Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported Fishing" on Thursday, September 8.

SAIS Professor Frederick Starr Receives "Spark Plug Award" from Greater New Orleans Foundation

On September 15, the Greater News Orleans Foundation presented Frederick Starr, chairman of the SAIS Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, with its first "Spark Plug Award." The award recognizes the instrumental role that Starr, who at the time was vice president of Tulane University, played in 1983 in creating this foundation to serve the community of New Orleans. Beyond his role at SAIS, Starr also is a professional jazz musician and an expert in the architecture of New Orleans.
