Stefano Guzzini

About

Professor Guzzini currently is Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies (since 2000); Professor of Government at Uppsala University (since 2005); and Professor of International Relations at Instituto de Relaciones Internacionais (IRI) of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) (since 2013). Previously he held positions as: Assistant Professor of Political Science and then Associate Professor of International Relations and European Studies (and head of department) at the Central European University, Budapest, Associate Professor of Government, Uppsala University, DAAD Guest Professor at the University of Bremen, and Visiting Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and Cornell University. He is a former Fellow of the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg, Institute for Advanced Study and the Collegio Carlo Alberto, Turin.

Professor Guzzini is President of the Central and East European International Studies Association (CEEISA), and former member of the Steering Committee of the Standing Group of International Relations (SGIR) of the ECPR and of the Governing Council of the International Studies Association (ISA). He is also editorial committee member of the book series of the SGIR/EISA (Palgrave Series in International Relations) and of the C&M Working Paper Series (of the IPSA Committee on Concepts and Methods) and Associate Editor of Contexto Internacional. He is the former editor of Journal of International Relations and Development and editorial committee member of Zeitschrift für Internationale Beziehungen, European Journal of International Relations, as well as of the book series of the IR Section of German Political Science Association. He is currently International Advisory Board member of Cooperation and Conflict, International Political Sociology, International Relations, Journal of Global Analysis, Journal of Global Security Studies, Journal of International Relations and Development, Lithuanian Annual Strategic Review, Relaciones Internacionales (Madrid), Review of International Political Economy and Spanish Yearbook of International Law. Formerly he served also on the Board of International Studies Review, Millennium, and Review of International Studies.

Professor Guzzini earned a Diplôme de l’Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po, 1987), his MSc(Econ) from the LSE (1988), and his PhD in Political and Social Science from the European University Institute (1994).

Publications
Guzzini's research focuses on international theory, security studies (ontological security), approaches to foreign policy analysis, as well as on the conceptual analysis and theories of power. More recently, he has also worked on interpretivist methodologies (process tracing and notions of non-efficient causality) and critical geopolitics as applied to Europe. His research appeared in leading international journals, including the European Journal of International Relations and International Organization. He has published nine books, including Realism in International Relations and International Political Economy: The Continuing Story of a Death Foretold (1998, translations into Chinese, Czech, Italian, Polish and Romanian). His most recent publications include Foreign Policy Analysis (2011, 5 vols co-edited with Walter Carlsnaes), The Diffusion of Power in Global Governance: International Political Economy meets Foucault (2012, co-edited with Iver Neumann), The Return of Geopolitics in Europe? Social Mechanisms and Foreign Policy Identity Crises (2012, forthcoming in Portuguese), and Power, Realism and Constructivism (2013), winner of the 2014 ISA Theory Section Best Book Award.
