Foreign Minister of Chechnya to Speak at JHU SAIS

Ilyas Ahmadov, foreign minister of Chechnya, will speak about "The Second Chechnya War" at the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) on Wednesday, 01/12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Ahmadov, the first high Chechen official to visit the United States during the war, was named foreign minister by President Maskhadov last year. A graduate in political science from Rostov University, he was named deputy foreign minister in 1991 when General Dzokhar Dudayev formed his secessionist government. From 1994 to 1996 he fought in the first war. After the war, in 1996, he founded the political party "Marsho" (Freedom).

The event, hosted by the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at SAIS, is open to the public and the media. It will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.
