Former Hungarian Ambassador to the U.S. András Simonyi Joins JHU SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations
Washington, D.C.—January 31, 2012— András Simonyi, former ambassador of Hungary to the United States and to NATO, has joined the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) as managing director of the school’s Center for Transatlantic Relations (CTR).
Simonyi will oversee a broad portfolio of activities, including seminars, policy study groups, media commentary, research projects, and engagement with students and center fellows.
“We are delighted to welcome András Simonyi to the center,” said Dan Hamilton, CTR executive director and Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Research Professor. “He brings a great deal of commitment to the transatlantic relationship and strong knowledge of European dynamics. Our activities will be much enhanced by his engagement.”
“András is a great friend of many years, an energetic leader and a tremendous addition to CTR’s outstanding team,” added Kurt Volker, CTR senior fellow and former U.S. ambassador to NATO, who continues his activities with the center having previously served as its managing director since 2009. “I look forward to working with András again as he takes on these new responsibilities.”
Simonyi is the latest European leader to join the center. Other distinguished European fellows include former President of the Government of Spain Jose Maria Aznar, former Prime Minister of Hungary Gordon Bajnai and former Irish Prime Minister John Bruton.
According to the University of Pennsylvania’s “Global Go To Think Tanks Rankings,” the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations was ranked 1st among university-affiliated think tanks in Washington, D.C., and 6th in the world in both 2010 and 2011. The center seeks to advance U.S.-European partnership in addressing the global challenges of the 21st century. For more information about CTR, visit http://transatlantic.sais-jhu.edu.
