JHU SAIS to Hold Conference on Future of U.S.-China Relations
The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will be the venue for a daylong conference, “China-United States Sustained Dialogue” on Monday, October 24 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The conference, co-sponsored by the Kettering Foundation and the Institute of American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in close cooperation with SAIS China Studies Program and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, will feature a series of panels and keynote talks focused on a substantive discussion of the current state and future direction of U.S.-China relations in today’s turbulent environment. This event also marks the 40th anniversary of then-National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger’s first trip to China to meet with its leaders.
Zbigniew Brzezinski, SAIS professor of American foreign policy, counselor and trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and former national security adviser, will give the conference’s luncheon keynote address at 11:50 a.m. Brzezinski worked with Deng Xiaoping and President Jimmy Carter to achieve normalization of U.S.-China relations in December 1978. Experts from academia, think tanks and international organizations will speak at the following sessions:

1:30 p.m. Panel 2: “Current Research on the State of Mind in the United States and China About the Relationship”
3:20 p.m. Panel 3: “Building Mutual Trust, Expanding U.S.-China Cooperation: How Each Nation Sees Its Own Responsibilities and Those of Others—Where Do We Go From Here?”
4:50 p.m. Closing Remarks
Admittance to the conference is by invitation only. However, the event is open to the media for coverage. Reporters should note that only conference participants will be able to ask questions during the Q&A sessions. The conference will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the school’s Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.
