JHU SAIS to Hold Discussion on Energy and 21st Century Eurasian Geopolitics
The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a forum, “The New Continentalism: Energy and 21st Century Eurasian Geopolitics” on Thursday, September 13 at 5:30 p.m.
This is the next event of the “SAIS Faculty Book Series” which will feature a discussion of The New Continentalism: Energy and 21st Century Eurasian Geopolitics, a book written by Kent Calder, director of the SAIS Japan Studies Program and the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, recently published by Yale University Press.
Calder will make some introductory remarks, followed by a panel discussion about the book. Panelists include:
¨ Charles Doran, director of the SAIS International Relations Program and the Canadian Studies Program
¨ David M. Lampton, director of the SAIS China Studies Program
¨ Frederick Starr, chairman of the SAIS Central Asia-Caucasus Institute
¨ Michael Mandelbaum (moderator), director of the SAIS American Foreign Policy Program
In his book, Calder argues that a new transnational configuration is emerging in Asia, driven by economic growth, rising energy demand and the erosion of longstanding geopolitical divisions, particularly since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. What Calder calls the “New Silk Road”—with a strengthening multi-faceted relationship between East Asia and the Middle East at its core—could eventually emerge as one of the world’s most important transnational configurations, in both economic and, ultimately, in geopolitical terms. Its importance will be significantly enhanced both by the growth of China and India, on the one hand, and also the receding political-military role of the United States in South and Central Asia.
