JHU SAIS to Host Conference on the Future of India

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will host a daylong conference, "India and Its Futures," on Thursday, 09/18 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

During this conference, hosted by the SAIS South Asia Studies Program, six of India's leading intellectuals, policy analysts and practitioners will address the domestic and global challenges facing India, offering their analyses of the country's potential futures.

9:30 a.m.

· Introductory remarks by SAIS Dean Jessica Einhorn

· "India and the Challenge of the Global Economy" addressed by Jagdish Bhagwati, professor at Columbia University

11 a.m.

· "Reforms, Political Economy and Indian Democracy" addressed by Pranab Bardhan, professor at the University of California at Berkeley

· "Political Limits to Economic Reform" addressed by Jairam Ramesh, columnist and policy analyst

2:30 p.m.

· "Imagining India's Urban Futures" addressed by Rahul Mehrotra, professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor

· "Re-Imagining India's Borders" addressed by C. Raja Mohan, reporter with The Hindu and policy analyst

4:45 p.m.

· "The Closing of the Indian Mind?" addressed by Romila Thapar, professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, currently serving as the Professor of Studies of the South at the Library of Congress' Kluge Center.
