JHU SAIS to Host Conference on Future of Nuclear Energy in United States and Europe

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a daylong conference, “After Fukushima: The Future of Nuclear Energy in the United States and Europe” on Tuesday, May 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This conference, co-hosted by the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations (CTR) and the Atlantic Council of the United States, will bring together experts from government, academia, think tanks and the private sector. Daniel Poneman, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy; João Vale de Almeida, ambassador of the Delegation of the EU to the United States; Francois Delattre, French ambassador to the United States; and Klaus Scharioth, German ambassador to the United States, will give the conference’s keynote addresses at 9 a.m.

9 a.m. Keynote speeches on “The Outlook for Nuclear Power in the United States and Europe After Fukushima”
10:15 a.m. Panel 1: “Political and Economic Realities of the Nuclear Resistance in the United States and Europe”
1 p.m. Panel 2: “Challenges and Solutions: Technology, Emergency Preparedness, Waste Management, Reactor Safety and Financing”
3:15 p.m. Panel 3: “Industry Perspectives on the Future of Nuclear Power in the United States and Europe and Addressing Public Concerns”
4:45 p.m. Closing remarks by Kurt Volker and Richard L. Lawson
