JHU SAIS to Host Conference on Southeast European Economic Development
The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a three-day conference, “The Southeast European Economic Forum” on Monday, March 26 from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, March 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The conference, hosted by the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations, will bring together economic leaders from the public and private sectors in North America, Europe and North Africa with senior government officials from the Southeast European region to discuss economic challenges and business opportunities. The forum also will highlight an emerging partnership for growth arising from the Arab Spring among the EU, U.S. and North Africa.
Jeanne Shaheen, Democratic senator from New Hampshire and chair of the Senate Foreign Relations’ Subcommittee on European Affairs, will give the keynote address on Monday, March 26. Russ Carnahan, Democratic representative from Missouri and a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Kolinda Grabar, assistant secretary general of NATO for Public Diplomacy, also will provide remarks that evening. On Tuesday, March 27 at 11 a.m., Phillip T. Reeker, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, will provide the day’s keynote address. Experts from academia, government, foreign ministries, international organizations and private sector will speak at the following sessions:
Monday, March 26

Tuesday, March 27
9:30 a.m. Panel 1: “What Will Attract Foreign Investment?”
11 a.m. Keynote address by Phillip Reeker
2:30 p.m. Panel 2: “A New Paradigm for the Mediterranean: EU-North African-U.S. Partnership for Growth”
3:30 p.m. Panel 3: “What Works? Best Business Practices in Southeast Europe”
4:45 p.m. Book Launch: Unfinished Business: The Western Balkans and the International Community
Wednesday, March 28
10 a.m. Panel 4: “Economic Opportunities Arising From the Arab Spring”
1 p.m. Panel 5: “Privatization: An Opportunity for International Cooperation”
SAIS also will host a live webcast each day of the conference available at http://www.sais-jhu.edu/pressroom/live.html.
The conference, which is free and open to the public, is hosted in partnership with the Vienna Economic Forum, the America-Bosnia Foundation, the Sarajevo Business Forum and the MIMS Group.
The sessions on Monday, March 26 and Wednesday, March 28 will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the school’s Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. The session on Tuesday, March 27 will be held in Room 500 of the school’s Bernstein-Offit Building, located at 1717 Massachusetts Ave., N.W.
