JHU SAIS to Host Two Energy Events

The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will host two energy events on 05/19 and 20. Both events are sponsored by SAIS' Central Asia-Caucasus Institute.

On Wednesday, 05/19, Stephen Remp, president and CEO, Ramco Energy plc of Aberdeen, Scotland, will speak about "Dancing with Elephants: Pioneering Oil and Gas in the Caspian, Central and Eastern Europe."

Remp, a SAIS graduate, established a small oil pipeline corrosion control company in Scotland in 1977. He was the first Westerner to recognize the investment opportunities in Caspian offshore oil, which had been passed over by the Soviet oil industry. He opened up the Azerbaijan SSR to Western business, and was asked by Azerbaijan to bring in major corporations into the investment project that became AIOC, the "deal of the century." Remp will explain the secret of his success as an "Independent" in an industry dominated by major corporations.

The event, which is invitation only, will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in Room 806 of the Rome Building, 1619 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, 05/20, the institute will host "Racing to Bring Gas to Turkey: The Caspian vs. Russia." Speakers include Edward Smith, president and CEO, PSG International, a joint venture pipeline development company between GE and Bechtel, and Thane Gustafson, Georgetown University professor of government and director, Eurasian Energy, CERA.

Turkey has a large future gas market which could be filled from Russia, from Iran or from Turkmenistan. Because of the economies of scale from co-locating oil and gas pipelines, the Turkmenistan project proposed by PSG International is also intertwined with the United States government's Caspian strategy.

The event, which is open to the public, will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 806 of the Rome Building.
