JHU SAIS Names New American Co-Director of Hopkins-Nanjing Center
Washington - 06/18/2001 - The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) has named Robert Daly as the new American co-director of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies.
Established in 1986, the center, located in Nanjing, China, is an educational joint venture between The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University, providing approximately100 students from the U.S. and other English-speaking countries and China the unique opportunity to live and study together. In addition, the center has the only open stacks, uncensored library in China, containing more than 65,000 Western and Chinese volumes. SAIS administers the center's activities on behalf of JHU.
As the Nanjing-based American co-director, Daly will be responsible for the management of the center's affairs with the Chinese co-director, as well as the administration of the newly established Hopkins-Nanjing Institute for International Research and summer language program, Nanjing Immersion.
Prior to joining the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, Daly most recently served as director of the U.S.-China Housing Initiative at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and as director of the China Seminar at Syracuse University.
Daly's work in China began when he was posted to Beijing and Taiwan as a foreign service officer from 1986 to 1991. After his overseas tour with the U.S. Information Agency, he taught Chinese at Cornell University and became a consultant on China affairs. Daly's clients have included numerous production companies such as the Children's Television Workshop, where he helped produce the Chinese versions of Sesame Street and other educational programs. In addition, he has worked with the National Committee on U.S.-China relations, serving as an interpreter for China's President Jiang Zemin, Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi, and several American leaders.
A native of New York, Daly received his B.A. in literature from Syracuse University in 1984. He lectures frequently on Chinese culture and has appeared as a commentator for CNN, VOA's China branch and Chinese radio and television.
SAIS is one of the country's leading graduate schools devoted to the study of international relations.
