Johns Hopkins SAIS Launches First-of-its-kind Master of Arts in Global Policy; Daniel Markey Named Academic Director
Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has expanded its degree offerings for experienced professionals with its new Master of Arts in Global Policy Program (GPP). This dynamic 16-month program blends theory and practice to allow students to immediately apply knowledge from the classroom to their workplace.
Daniel S. Markey has been appointed the academic director for the program. "I'm very excited to join the SAIS community,” said Markey. "What has impressed me most about the GPP is how much care has been put into making sure it delivers a world-class education in ways that meet the needs of experienced professionals. The GPP will contribute to SAIS's proud tradition of educating tomorrow's global leaders."
Markey comes to SAIS from the Council on Foreign Relations, where he was the Senior Fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia. Previously he held positions on the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff at the State Department, as well at Princeton University's Research Program in International Security and Harvard’s Olin Institute for Strategic Studies.
“With the GPP, we are bringing both a practical and academic approach to rising professionals who are hungry for a deeper understanding of international affairs in a way that directly benefits their careers,” said SAIS Dean Vali Nasr. “We are excited to have Dan at the helm of the GPP. His wide-ranging experience—from academia to government to think-tanks—will provide leadership and vision for the program’s growth.”
GPP classes meet conveniently on alternating weekends, with students moving through the program together and taking courses in a cohort format. The program design supports close student-to-student and student-to-faculty connections, which fosters strong professional networks spanning all sectors and regions of the world. The program culminates with an international residency, during which the group travels abroad to address a current global policy challenge.
GPP students will learn from SAIS's renowned faculty. SAIS faculty members have been internationally recognized for their scholarship, experience, and quality of teaching. They are award-winning authors, diplomats, thinkers, and senior-ranking officials who are authorities on international economics and international relations and who have expertise in contemporary issues concerning Africa, Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America.
