About

Based at Stanford University as the Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies; has served at SAIS as Bernard L. Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy, director of the International Development Program and dean of faculty; formerly Omer L. and Nancy Hirst Professor of Public Policy at the School of Public Policy at George Mason University; was a member of the Political Science Department of the Rand Corporation; twice served as a member of the Policy Planning Staff of the U.S. Department of State, the first time as a regular member specializing in Middle East affairs, later as deputy director for European political-military affairs; was a member of the U.S. delegation to the Egyptian-Israeli talks on Palestinian autonomy; serves on advisory boards for the Rand Corporation, The New America Foundation, the National Endowment for Democracy, The American Interest, the Journal of Democracy and others; has written widely on issues relating to democratization and international political economy, statebuilding, institutions and political development; Ph.D., political science, Harvard University.
