“Revolt in Central Asia: the Cataclysm of 1916,” a presentation and discussion on the Revolt of 1916, will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
One hundred years ago, Central Asia rose up in revolt against Russian rule when the Tsarist government tried to draft Turkic soldiers into the army during the time of World War I. More than 250,000 Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, and Tajiks were killed or died trying to flee to China. Soviet authorities tried to suppress all memory of the 1916 Revolt, but the anniversary of the tragic event has generated new interest.
The Central Asia-Caucasus Institute will mark the centennial of the revolt by presenting and discussing two publications: a new edition of the book The Revolt of 1916 in Russian Central Asia by Edward Dennis Sokol, with a foreword by Dr. S. Frederick Starr (JHU Press); and a Silk Road Paper titled “Central Asia in Revolt: the Cataclysm of 1916,” edited by Zamira Sydykova.
