From Bologna to Brussels: A Two-Day Career Trek

Brussels Career Trek, Brussels

A group of students from SAIS Europe travelled from Bologna to Brussels on a career trek that took them to several major institutions. Accompanied by Alan Fusetto, director of career services at SAIS Europe, the students spent two days in the Belgian capital—January 23 and 24, 2023—visiting multiple locations ranging from international security institutions to private-sector players and think tanks.

Among the stops in the two-day trek were the Brussels headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the EU Parliament, the EU Commission, the EU Council, the European External Action Service, Carnegie Europe, and the Centre for European Policy Studies.

Attending the Brussels career trek opened my eyes to new opportunities I wasn’t aware of, and put me in the room with employers and organizations I have always admired.

Regularly organized across the three campuses of SAIS (Washington, DC; Bologna, Italy; and Nanjing, China), SAIS career treks are designed to give participating students insider perspectives on target roles and industries through experiential learning and networking opportunities. The treks often feature alumni speakers and presenters, which students particularly appreciate.

“Attending the Brussels career trek opened my eyes to new opportunities I wasn’t aware of, and put me in the room with employers and organizations I have always admired,” said Rowan Humphries, one of the student participants. “Getting face time with SAIS alums and other recruiters who shared their experiences and advice was invaluable.”

During a cocktail gathering on January 23, participating students also had the opportunity to meet SAIS alumni based in Brussels.
