Central Asia and the Caucasus: From Independence to Interdependence" with Rumsfeld Fellows on April 27, 2016

“Central Asia and the Caucasus: From Independence to Interdependence,” a Central Asia-Caucasus Institute Forum, will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
The fall of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics enabled people of Central Asia and the Caucasus (Greater Central Asia) to claim full independence and sovereignty. While bringing many benefits, the strengthening of new sovereignties also brought self-isolation and rivalry among people who had actively interacted for hundreds of years before the Russian conquest. The isolationism has created tensions in the region, deepened poverty, and fostered religious radicalization. Meanwhile geographic proximity, interdependent infrastructure, and the presence of Russian media have maintained ties with Russia.
Is it time to shift from the radical independence to intra-regional dialogue and economic integration within the region? Should the region as a whole capitalize on its strategic location, cultural diversity, and human capital? Participants of the Rumsfeld Fellowship Program, representing nine countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus, will answer these questions and share their expertise.
