A Conversation with Michael Lynton

Michael Lynton, CEO Sony Entertainment, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment
October 19, 2015

Michael Lynton, the CEO of Sony and Sony Pictures Entertainment, came to the Washington, DC campus to discuss the lessons he and his company learned following the 2014 cyber hacks of Sony. Specifically, he and Dean Vali Nasr talked about how the hacks affected Sony, what they did to recover and possible measures to prevent a similar occurrence in the future. Outside the area of cyber-security, Mr. Lynton also gave his opinions on the evolution of screen media and its ties to cultures around the world. Mr. Lynton discussed the effects of technological change on the entertainment industry, and how Sony has to use these changes to its advantage. The introduction of DVR and live-streaming technology has completely changed the shape of the industry and has given rise to an era of television programming that would have never been possible without these changes. Finally, Mr. Lynton discussed how a multinational, multimedia company, such as Sony, behaves in an ever-changing, globalized world. Specifically, the demand for American entertainment in East Asia is huge, but dealing with state-sponsored censorship has created its own set of problems.
