An Evening With the Kunqu Opera
Kunqu Opera
The Hopkins-Nanjing Center
November 12, 2015
Students and faculty at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center attended a special on-campus performance by the Kunqu Opera, a national touring theater troupe performing classical Chinese operas from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Breaking from their usual script, performers paused to add historical context for each segment and brought audience members onto the stage to experience the story-telling opera format.
The special performance was arranged as one of a series of events continuing throughout 2016 commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, the first joint educational venture by a western university in modern China, which opened in 1986.
