A Focus on Energy and Environmental Policy

Rebecca first heard about Johns Hopkins SAIS from her undergraduate thesis advisor, but at the time she was not actively considering graduate programs. After working for a few years, she decided she wanted a career change, specifically in the field of international climate finance. She decided to apply to the school because its curriculum offered a robust combination of courses in international affairs, economics, and energy and environmental policy, and this decision was further cemented by the opportunity offered by the school to develop a strong quantitative skill set.

Prior to pursuing graduate studies, Rebecca spent a year teaching English in Japan as part of the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Program. Next, she worked in a large corporate law firm in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri for two years.

At Johns Hopkins SAIS, Rebecca is currently the Co-President of the Energy & Environment Career Club, as well as a member of the Sustainability Task Force. During the summer, she interned with the U.S. Department of Treasury, where she gained hands-on experience with the multilateral climate trust funds that finance sustainable development projects. Now in her second year, Rebecca works as a consultant for global reinsurer, Swiss Re, on the economic impact of invasive species in North America and potential insurance mechanisms for mitigating risk, as part of her year-long practicum project with the school’s Energy, Resources and Environment program.

After completing her studies, Rebecca hopes to utilize the finance, infrastructure, and energy and environmental policy expertise she has developed during her studies to impact the facilitation of climate change adaptation and resiliency.
