Former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft to Give Keynote Lecture at JHU SAIS Sculpture Dedication Ceremony
Lieutenant General Brent Scowcroft will give the Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Lecture at the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) on Wednesday, 04/6 at 5 p.m.
Scowcroft, president of The Scowcroft Group, Inc. who served as national security adviser to Presidents George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford, will speak about "The Future of the United Nations." Scowcroft also recently served as a member of the United Nations High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change.
The lecture is part of a ceremony to dedicate the gift of "Single Form," an 11-foot bronze sculpture by artist Barbara Hepworth, to SAIS by the Blaustein, Rosenberg and Thalheimer families. The original 22-foot-tall version of "Single Form," unveiled in 1964, stands in front of the United Nations' Headquarters in New York. Jacob Blaustein, a former U.S. delegate to the U.N., commissioned Hepworth to create the sculpture as a memorial to his friend, Dag Hammarskjöld, the U.N. Secretary-General from Sweden who was killed in a plane crash while on a mission in the Congo.
This event is not open to the public. However, the sculpture dedication ceremony and Scowcroft's speech are open to the media for coverage.
The dedication ceremony begins at 4 p.m., featuring remarks by SAIS Dean Jessica P. Einhorn, Jan M. Eliasson, ambassador of Sweden to the United States, Johns Hopkins University President William R. Brody, and Barbara Blaustein Hirschhorn.
Broadcast journalists who are only covering Scowcroft's speech at 5 p.m. must arrive at SAIS to set up equipment no later than 3:45 p.m.
The sculpture dedication ceremony will take place in the SAIS Nitze Building Courtyard and Scowcroft's speech will take place in the Kenney Auditorium. Both venues are located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., in Washington, D.C.
Members of the media that plan to cover the event must register with Felisa Neuringer Klubes at the SAIS Public Affairs Office at 202.663.5626 or [email protected].
