Gaining a Career-Building Edge in Cybersecurity

Hyea Won Lee
MA ’17
Energy, Resources and Environment (ERE)

Hyea Won decided to attend Johns Hopkins SAIS not just for its reputation for rigorous international affairs and economics program, but also for the tightly connected community among students and faculty members. Also, attending graduate school at the center of Washington, DC helped her obtain hands-on experiences by applying what she learned in the classroom to the real world.

Prior to her master’s studies, Hyea Won worked for Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA), the government agency responsible for the Internet and cyber-security policy development in Korea. At KISA, she worked on the global internet governance discussion and cyber-security dialogues held at multilateral organizations such as OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and ITU (International Telecommunication Union). Hyea Won chose the Energy, Environment and Resources concentration to learn more about the intersection between technology and energy, issues ranging from cyber-security in critical infrastructure to information and communication technology (ICT) for sustainable development.

Hyea Won is currently working at the World Bank, where she provides technical assistance for a project that aims to increase agricultural efficiency and productivity through sensor-based Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. While at Johns Hopkins SAIS, Hyea Won participated in the Mock Climate Change Negotiation and travelled with classmates to Israel.

After graduation, Hyea Won plans to go back to Korea and looks forward to applying her knowledge to technology and cyberspace policy making.
