Gaining Clean Energy Expertise to Build a Sustainable Future

After working for three years in the public and private sectors and with international organizations in Mongolia, Batt felt ready to pursue a graduate degree in international economics to prepare for the next chapter of his life. Johns Hopkins SAIS was Batt’s top choice for its prestige, strong emphasis on economics and finance, and location in Washington offering access to major policy institutions.

Batt chose to concentrate in ERE with an emphasis on clean energy and electricity with a goal to contribute to the work of climate change mitigation. This past year, Batt wrote a report examining China’s demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) which was distributed at the 2019 Shanghai LNG Conference, a highlight of his graduate studies so far.

Outside of the classroom, Batt journeyed to Seoul and the Korean demilitarized zone to study nuclear security issues on the Korean Peninsula. He also participated in the Energy Career Trek to Houston and Austin, Texas. He enjoyed visiting the headquarters of major energy companies and energy-related organizations in one of the energy capitals in the world. Batt and several classmates founded the school’s East Asia Club to share perspectives on the region’s political economy.

After graduation, Batt plans to work at the intersection of clean energy policy and development. Eventually, he would like to contribute to clean energy transition in developing countries, including his home country, Mongolia.
