Gaining Expertise Towards a Career in Eurasian Affairs and Defense

Jackie Mahler
MA ’18
European and Eurasian Studies
Jackie first decided to apply to Johns Hopkins SAIS because she wanted to attend a top international relations graduate program. Moreover, having always been fond of quantitative subjects, she thought taking courses in Economics and Finance would give her a unique opportunity to combine her liberal arts degree with a quantitative background.
Prior to her graduate studies, Jackie worked for two years as an intern for the Center for International Policy (CIP), as an intern at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), and as a Project Assistant at the National Democratic Institute focusing on Kyrgyzstan and Georgia. She also holds a degree in International Relations and French, with a minor in Marine Biology, from Tulane University.
At Johns Hopkins SAIS, Jackie is Co-President of the Defense and Intelligence Club and a member of the Eurasia Club. This past summer she interned at the Polish Institute for International Affairs (PISM) in Warsaw, a top think tank in Central and Eastern Europe. After graduation, she would like to combine her interest for Eurasian affairs and defense. Having spent time studying and working with Eurasian defense and having studied five European languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Czech), her ideal career would allow her to continue these studies and apply what she already knows.
