The Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC) continued its celebration of 30 years of leadership in Chinese and American Studies with a reception at the Washington, DC campus bringing together students, alumni, and friends of the center. 

In his opening remarks, Dean Vali Nasr commented on the evolving roles of China and the US in world affairs. "As the critical importance of Asia in the study and application of international affairs has grown, so too has the significance of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center."

Calling the gathering an act of diplomacy, Nanjing University Chancellor Zhang Yibin thanked those in attendance for fostering a deeper and stronger US-China relationship through their support of this unique academic partnership between Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University. 

SAIS China Director David M. Lampton introduced the honored guests, including 14 former American and Chinese co-directors from the HNC’s 30-year history. 

Jill McGovern, a leader of the Hopkins-Nanjing Council, shared her perspective on the founding of the HNC, likening the partnership to a close family whose members nurture one another. 

Former Johns Hopkins SAIS Dean George Packard recalled the negotiations behind the center’s founding, beginning with a 1979 meeting in Rome where Johns Hopkins University President Stephen Muller revealed his vision for a new campus in China. At the time it was a radical plan, Packard said, and nothing about the center’s establishment or survival was inevitable. But through the shared vision of Muller and Nanjing University President Kuang Yaming, the HNC would go on to take shape and become the first, and longest running, joint Sino-American program for the study of international relations.
