JHU SAIS to Hold Discussion on Crisis in U.S.-German Relations
The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a forum, "Parting Ways: The Crisis in German-American Relations," on Tuesday, 12/14 at 10:30 a.m.
This event, co-hosted by the SAIS European Studies Program, the Johns Hopkins American Institute for Contemporary German Studies and the Brookings Institution, will feature a discussion of Parting Ways: The Crisis in German-American Relations, a book written by Stephen Szabo, professor of European studies at SAIS, recently published by Brookings Institution Press.
What are the lessons learned from the transatlantic conflict over Iraq, particularly for German-American relations? Some experts have called it the end of a special relationship; others emphasize the changing strategic equation between Germany and the United States; still others argue the critical importance of leaders and their styles and substance in international politics. In his new book, Szabo addresses these issues and the events of the German-American meltdown in 2003 and what they mean for the future of this critical relationship.
Joining Szabo for this discussion will be David Calleo, director of the SAIS European Studies Program, and Rolf Nikel, minister for political affairs at the German Embassy.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the first-floor auditorium of the school's Rome Building, located at 1619 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., in Washington, D.C. Members of the public should RSVP to [email protected] or 202.332.9312, ext. 117.For more information, contact Felisa Neuringer Klubes in the SAIS Public Affairs Office at 202.663.5626 or [email protected]
