JHU SAIS to Hold Discussion on Mexico's Foreign and Security Policy Post-09/11

The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a forum, "Beyond the Border and Across the Atlantic: Mexico's Foreign and Security Policy Post-09/11," on Monday, 05/3 at 5 p.m.

This event, hosted by the Center for Transatlantic Relations, will feature a discussion of Beyond the Border and Across the Atlantic: Mexico's Foreign and Security Policy Post-09/11, a new book written by Loretta Bondì, director of the Cooperative Security Program at the center.

In addition to Bondì, panelists for this session include:

Miguel Ruíz Cabañas, permanent representative of Mexico to the Organization of American States

Esther Brimmer, deputy director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations

Johanna Mendelson Forman, senior program officer for peace, security and human rights at the United Nations Foundation

Beyond the Border and Across the Atlantic chronicles crucial choices and defining moments of Mexico's unique experiment in the international foreign and security arena, and describes President Vicente Fox's fascinating roller coaster of successes and failures on the multilateral and bilateral scene.

Fox's presidency of Mexico promised to change the course of Mexican foreign policy by bolstering international human rights and multilateral institutions, and by helping to forge an area of durable security in the western hemisphere. It sought to inject a new sense of purpose in its relationships with the United States and the European Union. In this attempt, Mexico enlisted support from the international community to help the country through its transition and to anchor it to the evolving security debate in the post-09/11environment.
