JHU SAIS to Host Conference on Afghanistan After the Loya Jirga
The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a conference, "Afghanistan After the Loya Jirga" on Thursday, 07/11 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The national Loya Jirga, which recently ended, was a vital stage in the process established in Bonn to bring Afghanistan to some kind of normal governance and prosperity. This conference will explore whether the U.S.'s strategy to bring stability to Afghanistan is on track or not.
Panelists for this W.P. Carey Forum of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute (CACI) at SAIS include:
- Zal05/Khalilzad, special assistant to the president for National Security Affairs and U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan
- Marin Strmecki, vice president of the Smith Richardson Foundation
- Sam Brownback, U.S. Senator, R-Kan. (invited)
- Omar Zakhilwal, senior research economist for the Canadian government
- S. Frederick Starr, chairman of the CACI at SAIS
- Ali Jalali, chief of Voice of America's Farsi service
