JHU SAIS to Host Conference on Future of Pakistan
The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will host a conference, "The Future of Pakistan: The Politics and Economics of Development in Pakistan," on Monday, 11/8 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Caught at the center of global events, Pakistan currently faces urgent challenges and difficult choices. After 9/11, questions of Pakistan's stability-both political and economic-have come to the fore. For all its international importance, in many ways Pakistan's political and domestic situation has been poorly understood by foreign observers, many of whom remain unaware of the particular nature of Pakistan's development. Hosted by the SAIS South Asia Studies Program, this conference, which brings together some of Pakistan's best known journalists and economists, analyzes the specific character of Pakistan's social, economic and political challenges, and presents a more nuanced picture of the country.
The following topics will be discussed during a series of panel discussions. The complete conference agenda of speakers is below.
9-10 a.m. - Opening Remarks
10 a.m.- noon - Panel 1: "Region, Religion and the World"
1-3 p.m. - Panel 2: "Social Change, Institutions and Social Groups"
3:30-5:30 p.m.- Panel 3: "Economic Development in Pakistan"
The conference will be held in the Kenney Auditorium, first floor of the SAIS Nitze Building at 1740 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. Members of the public should RSVP to [email protected] or 202.663.5722.
