JHU SAIS to Host Forum on Nation-Building: Beyond Afghanistan and Iraq

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will host a forum, "Nation-Building: Beyond Afghanistan and Iraq" on Tuesday, 02/7 at 6 p.m.

The forum celebrates the launch of Nation-Building: Beyond Afghanistan and Iraq, a book edited by Francis Fukuyama, director of the SAIS International Development Program and Bernard L. Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy. The book, published by Johns Hopkins University Press and based on a conference held at SAIS in 04/2004, explores the American experience in post-conflict reconstruction, both historically in Germany, Japan, Haiti and Bosnia, and in the two most recent cases of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Several of the book's contributors will participate in a panel discussion about their chapters as well as the current situation in Afghanistan and Iraq. Event participants include:

  • Francis Fukuyama
  • Johanna Mendelson Forman, director of Peace, Security and Human Rights Policy at the U.N. Foundation
  • James Dobbins, director of the Rand Corporation's International Security and Defense Policy Center
  • Frederick Starr, chairman of the SAIS Central Asia-Caucasus Institute

The SAIS International Development Program's Bernard L. Schwartz Forum on Constructive Capitalism is co-hosting this event with the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association.

The event, free and open to the public, will be held in Kenney Auditorium located on the first floor of the school's Nitze Building, 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. Members of the public must RSVP to the JHU Alumni Relations Office at 1.800.548.5481.
