JHU SAIS to Host Forum on the Xinjiang Problem in China

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a forum, "The Xinjiang Problem" on Wednesday, 06/18 at at 5:30 p.m. (preceded by a reception at 5 p.m.)

Graham Fuller, former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council, and Frederick Starr, chairman of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute (CACI) at SAIS, will be the featured speakers during this next W.P. Carey Forum.

Xinjiang, China's Central Asian borderland, comprises 18 percent of the country's area, ranks 12th among 31 provinces in terms of GDP, has more oil and gas than any other province, and its population includes the world's fourth largest group of Turkic peoples, mainly Uyghurs. Xinjiang's Uyghurs today are discontented. Many seek autonomy, some dream of a separate state. Small but significant numbers of the latter have resorted to terrorist-like tactics.
