JHU SAIS Hosts International Crisis Simulation for D.C. High School Students
More than 50 District of Columbia public high school students will participate in the annual international crisis simulation on Saturday, 03/5 at The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C.
This year's crisis simulation focuses on the North Korean nuclear issue. Students from four D.C. high schools will represent five of the six nations in the "Six Party Talks."
SAIS graduate students serve as coaches for each of the schools involved. The coaches have been meeting with their students several times since February. Working closely with high school faculty sponsors, the coaches have guided the students in understanding the North Korean nuclear situation and the perspective of the country their respective schools represent. Coaches have also taught basic negotiation and conflict resolution skills. During the 03/5 crisis simulation event, approximately 20 SAIS coaches will guide their student groups as the schools attempt to negotiate a solution to fictional-yet realistic-developments in the North Korean situation.
The crisis simulation exercise introduces the high school students to international relations while building public speaking skills and providing insight into conflict resolution. For SAIS graduate students, many of whom are from either outside the Washington metropolitan area or from abroad, the program provides a unique opportunity to experience D.C. on a new level while contributing to the local community.
The event is organized by SAIS's D.C. Student Outreach group, a student-run community service group formed to introduce Washington's public high school students to the field of international relations.
Participating high schools and their roles for the simulation are as follows: Banneker Academic Senior High School (United States and Japan); Eastern Senior High School (China); Anacostia Senior High School (South Korea); and Duke Ellington School of the Arts (North Korea).
The crisis simulation will take place on Saturday, 03/5 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
10 a.m. - 11 a.m. - opening ceremony in the Kenney Auditorium, Nitze Building
11 a.m. - 3 p.m. - crisis simulation negotiation sessions throughout the Nitze Building
