Johns Hopkins SAIS expert available to discuss Argentina's political and economic future amid strikes, slow economic recovery

EXPERT ADVISORY

As Argentina confronts slow economic recovery and social conflict, Dr. Riordan Roett, Director of the Latin American Studies Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), is available to offer insight about Argentina’s financial and political future.

Roett recently returned from leading graduate students on a study trip to Buenos Aires, where they met with officials and members of Congress, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Production, Ministry of External Affairs, Pan American Energy, and the Argentine Council for International Relations.

He is available to discuss:

  • What challenges lie ahead for President Mauricio Macri and his administration?
  • How Argentina’s foreign policy has evolved under Macri compared to former President Cristina Kirchner?
  • What is the process of deregulating the economy, and will it be successful?
  • Why are Argentine teachers on strike, and what are the terms they seek?
  • What is the potential outlook for the mid-term election in October?

“After 12 years of populist-nationalist politics, the Argentine public is waiting to see if the reform program of President Mauricio Macri will be successful and restore stability to the Argentine economy,” Dr. Roett said. “The mid-term elections in October this year will be the first public test of whether or not Argentinians are confident in the government’s program.”

He has offered commentary on Latin America as cited in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Bloomberg, CBS News, Foreign Policy.
