Johns Hopkins SAIS expert available to discuss Brazil’s upcoming elections, political future following appeal ruling upholding conviction of ex-president

Following a Jan. 24 appeal ruling that upholds a corruption conviction against former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Dr. Riordan Roett, Director of the Latin American Studies Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), is available to discuss the implications for politics in Brazil ahead of the October elections. 
 
Dr. Roett argues the appeals court decision raises the probability that the former president – known as Lula – may be barred from competing in the upcoming elections. However, the presidential hopeful retains additional appeal options, which the scholar believes Lula will likely pursue in the months ahead. Despite the corruption scandal, early polling indicates that the ex-president leads a crowded field of presidential candidates and he retains significant support among Brazil’s working class and members of the Workers Party (PT).
