Johns Hopkins SAIS expert available to discuss U.S.-Italy relations during state visit

As U.S. President Barack Obama prepares to host Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi for an official visit and state dinner, Erik Jones, Director of European and Eurasian Studies and Professor of European Studies and International Political Economy at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), is available to offer insight on U.S.-Italy relations and the future of Italian politics.

The U.S. said Renzi’s visit will be an opportunity to celebrate relations with one its closest allies and expand cooperation to address climate change, economic growth and the global refugee crisis. Jones said the prime minister's trip comes at a delicate moment for Italy, amid the outcome and uncertainty of an upcoming referendum on constitutional reforms, and the aftermath of Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

Jones, the editor of The Oxford Handbook on Italian Politics, has written widely on Italian politics. He is available to discuss U.S.-Italy relations, and in particular:

• Is Renzi’s upcoming state visit likely to bolster support for the prime minister back at home?
• Are parallels between Italy and Britain accurate in regard to the Brexit vote? Is Italy the next strategic domino in the breakdown of European integration?

Following Renzi’s visit to the White House, Johns Hopkins SAIS will welcome the prime minister to its D.C. campus on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016 for “A Conversation on Trans-Atlantic Relations, Global Security and the Future of the European Union.”
