Johns Hopkins SAIS experts available to discuss politics in China during the Communist Party Congress

As China’s ruling Communist Party convenes for its 19th Party Congress, experts at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) are available to discuss the future of China’s political leadership, economy, and rise a global leader.
 
Director of China Studies and the George and Sadie Hyman Professor of China Studies David M. Lampton recently noted the Party Congress “is more likely to look like a coronation than an institutionalized transition to a leader’s second term.”
 
Carla Freeman, Director of the Foreign Policy Institute and Associate Director of China Studies, said the trajectory of relations between the U.S. and China – a likely agenda item—is more uncertain today than any time since the two countries normalized ties.

Assistant Professor of International Affairs and China Studies David Bulman said discussions from the weeklong congress could also have potential implications for China’s future economic reform. 
 
The scholars can further discuss:

• What are China’s domestic and international agendas for the next five years?
• What direction is the Communist Party headed under the leadership of President Xi Jinping?
• Could Xi become the next party chairman and extend his political influence?
• In addition to an anti-corruption campaign, what are some of China’s achievements under Xi?
• What is the future of China relations with the U.S., North Korea, and Taiwan?
• What is China’s role in U.S. strategy toward East Asia?
