Johns Hopkins SAIS to host “U.S.-China Relations in the Era of Donald Trump and Xi Jinping” on Wednesday, September 27, 2017

The SAIS China Forum will host “U.S.-China Relations in the Era of Donald Trump and Xi Jinping” at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
 
The U.S.-China relationship has always presented challenges for leaders of both countries, with increasing frictions even before Chinese President Xi Jinping took office almost five years ago. Other developments since then, including the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, have compounded uncertainties and risks.
 
Dr. David M. Lampton, the Director of China Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS and former President of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, will discuss:

• The state of relations between Beijing and Washington
• The core challenges facing the U.S.-China relationship
• Three areas that need additional focus and an adjusted U.S. approach to address relations with China and the broader Asian region
• The two countries working together to address challenges with North Korea

About the Speaker
David M. Lampton is the George and Sadie Hyman Professor of China Studies and Director of China Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a Gilman Scholar at The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Lampton teaches courses on U.S.-China relations, domestic policy, foreign policy, and leadership. He is currently the Chairman of The Asia Foundation. Dr. Lampton served as the Dean of Faculty from 2004 to 2012. He is also the former President of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
 
He has authored several books including Following the Leader: Ruling China, from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping (University of California Press, 2014), The Three Faces of Chinese Power: Might, Money, and Minds (2008, University of California Press), and Same Bed, Different Dreams: Managing United States-China Relations 1989-2000 (2001, University of California Press); he also edited The Making of Chinese Foreign and Security Policy in the Post-Mao Era (Stanford University Press, 2001).  Dr. Lampton is currently working with colleagues on a book about an eight-country study of railways from Kunming to Singapore.
