About the Speaker
Matteo Renzi was born in Florence in January 1975. Renzi joined the Scout Movement at a very early age and made his own Scout motto of "leaving this world a little better than you found it" (in Baden Powell's words). He became interested in politics during his university years, campaigning in support of Romano Prodi, who later became Italy's Prime Minister and President of the European Commission. Renzi obtained a law degree (J.D.) from Florence University in 1999. In 2004, he was elected President of the Florence Provincial Council. Renzi announced his intention to run for Mayor of the city of Florence in 2008. He was elected Mayor in June 2009. For the first time in Florence, the number of city councilors was halved, and an equal number of male and female councilors were appointed.
From 2010 to 2012, his involvement in national politics increased. In 2013, Renzi ran for the leadership of the Democratic Party; he was appointed Secretary of the PD with 67.5 percent of preferences. Renzi was appointed as the new President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic in February 2014, the youngest president in Italy's history. The PD obtained 40.8 percent of the votes at the European Elections in May 2014, the best results since the Party was established and the largest amount of votes collected by a European party with more than 11 million votes.
