Johns Hopkins SAIS to host discussion on new book, “Mexico under Misplaced Monopolies,” with author Dr. Francisco E. González, December 6 in Washington, DC

The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Faculty Research Forum will host a seminar with Dr. Francisco E. González, Associate Professor of International Political Economy and Latin American Politics, to discuss his latest book, Mexico under Misplaced Monopolies: Concentrated Wealth and Growing Violence, from the 1980s to the Present. This book examines factors that led to Mexico’s current political economy.
 
During the seminar, Dr. González and Richard Miles, senior fellow at the American Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), will address the following topics related to the book:
 

  • Mexico’s adoption of neoliberal economic policies
  • Gradual opening of Mexico’s political system
  • Varying levels of ‘barriers to entry’ in Mexico’s political and economic spheres
  • Persistence and growth of wealth concentration since the 1990s
  • Growth and spread of organized crime and violence since the 2000s
