Johns Hopkins SAIS Dean Eliot A. Cohen will host Elizabeth Samet, author and professor of English at the United States Military Academy, as part of the Dean’s Speaker Series on Wednesday, March 10. Samet, who has written several books, including Soldier's Heart: Reading Literature Through Peace and War at West Point, an account of her experiences teaching literature to America's future military elite, which was included in the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2007 list, will join Cohen for a discussion on how literature can build character and foster critical-thinking skills for the world’s future leaders. About the Speaker
Elizabeth Samet is an author whose books include Leadership: Essential Writings by Our Greatest Thinkers, No Man's Land: Preparing for War and Peace in Post-9/11 America, Soldier's Heart: Reading Literature Through Peace and War at West Point, which won the Los Angeles Times’ Book Prize for Current Interest and was included in the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2007 list, and Willing Obedience: Citizens, Soldiers, and the Progress of Consent in America, 1776-1898. Samet served as editor of Leadership: Essential Writings by Our Greatest Thinkers and, most recently, The Annotated Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant. She is the recipient of the NEH Public Scholar Grant, Hiett Prize in the Humanities, and Guggenheim Fellowship, which will support the research and writing of her next book, Looking for the Good War: American Amnesia and the Violent Pursuit of Happiness, scheduled for release in fall 2021.
