“Food Systems for Sustainable Development: A UN Perspective,” a discussion from the SAIS Global Issues in Agriculture Series, will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
The event will feature a panel including members of the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) on Food Security and Nutrition, the science-policy interface of the UN Committee on World Food Security. The team lead for the HLPE is Dr. Jessica Fanzo, Director of the Global Food Ethics and Policy Program and Bloomberg Distinguished Associate Professor of Ethics & Global Food and Agriculture at Johns Hopkins SAIS and the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.
Fanzo also organizes the SAIS Global Issues in Agriculture Series, which has addressed nutrition systems, improving agriculture and land use, climate change and mitigation policies, and organic farming.

About the Speakers
Dr. Kathleen Merrigan is Executive Director of Sustainability at the George Washington University, where she leads the GW Sustainability Collaborative, GW Food Institute, and serves as Professor of Public Policy. Dr. Merrigan serves as a Co-Chair for AGree, Board Director for the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture and FoodCorps, a member of the Harvard Pilgrim Healthy Food Fund Advisory Committee, Senior Advisor at the Kendall Foundation, and steering committee member of the Council of Environmental Deans and Directors of the National Council for Science and the Environment and the UN Environment Programme led initiative TEEB for Agriculture & Food. From 2009 to2013, Dr. Merrigan was U.S. Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Eileen Kennedy is a former Dean and Professor of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. Her research interests include assessing the health, nutrition, diet and food security impacts of policies and programs; nutrient density and diet diversity; and agriculture nutrition linkages. Formerly a member of the UN SCN Advisory Group on Nutrition, she is currently a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Council on Food Security and Nutrition. She founded and was the first Executive Director of the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. She created the Healthy Eating Index, a single summary measure of diet quality.
Simon Kimenju is a Research Fellow at Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development of Egerton University in Kenya. Previously, Simon worked with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) in Nairobi. His main research interests are on the interlinkages between food systems, nutrition, and health. Simon is a member of several scientific networks including the African Growth and Development Policy Modelling Consortium (AGRODEP) and the Academia and Research Network of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Kenya Movement
Elisabetta Recine is a nutritionist with a PhD in Public Health. Professor at the University of Brasília, she has academic and governmental experience in food and nutrition policies, food and nutrition security, and the right to food. Since 2008, she has been Counselor of the Brazilian National Food and Nutrition Security Council, adviser board of the presidency of the republic. Her professional life has been guided by the perspective of relating the different dimensions of the food system and consumption, determinants of food behavior, people's health, aiming at the progressive realization of right to adequate food.
Dipa Sinha teaches Economics at Ambedkar University, Delhi. She has published widely on the right to adequate food and nutrition in India and has been an active participant in the debates and mobilization in India, especially around the key social determinants of child malnutrition. As an Adviser to the Commissioners to the Supreme Court of India, she has contributed to the research work which influenced the court to pass more than 200 orders in the landmark Right to Food case. Sinha was part of the team that worked with the National Advisory Council to draft the National Food Security Act in 2013.
Fengying Nie is the Deputy Director of the Center for International Agricultural Research (CIAR) at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS). She conducted more than 50 projects for national agencies as the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Council Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development and Natural Science Foundation, China Development Bank. She is currently Secretary General of the Chinese Association of Agricultural Modernization and member of: the Consultant Committee of the State Council Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development; Chinese Association of Agro-Technical Economics; Beijing Association of Technical Economics; Chinese Livestock Economics Association.
