"Latin America and the Asian Giants: Evolving Ties with China and India," will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The panel discussion is around the book, Latin America and the Asian Giants, edited by Johns Hopkins SAIS faculty Dr. Riordan Roett and Dr. Guadalupe Paz.
Latin America’s pivot to Asia now includes growing political and economic relations, not only with China, but also with India. In the years since China adopted a "going global" strategy to promote its overseas investment, expand export markets, and gain much-needed access to natural resources, Sino-Latin American relations have both deepened and broadened at an unexpectedly rapid pace.
In recent years, relations have become far more nuanced and multifaceted than ever before. India, a relatively new player, has slowly strengthened its ties with Latin America. As one of Asia’s largest markets, it offers parallels to the Chinese case. Will Indo-Latin American ties follow a similar path? To what extent these changing dynamics will redefine Latin America’s relations with India is a question of increasing relevance for policymakers. The panel will assess critical policy areas driving the relationship between these two Asian giants and Latin America.
