“The Rise of Populism: A Global Approach,” will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
The panel discussion will address questions to include:
· What is the extent to which we can talk about a “resurgence and spread” of populism?
· To what extent is today’s populism similar or different to previous episodes in the developed and developing world?
· Why are we seeing populism in some areas but not in others?
· What are the risks to the private sector in this political climate?
The event is presented by the Latin American Studies Program (LASP) at Johns Hopkins SAIS and market research firm Ipsos.

About the Speakers
Sheri Berman is a professor of political science at Barnard College, Columbia University. She has written extensively on European politics, democratization and consolidation, fascism and populism, and the history of the left. Her books include The Social Democratic Moment (Harvard University Press) and The Primacy of Politics (Cambridge University Press) and she has published widely in both academic and non-academic journals, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Dissent, Foreign Affairs and Vox. She is currently the chair of the Council for European Studies and sits on the board of several journals. She is also finishing up a book tentatively titled Democracy and Dictatorship in Europe from the Ancien Regime to the Present Day.
Christopher Garman is a Director at Eurasia Group, the Head of its Latin America practice, and the Lead Analyst on Brazil. From 2001 to 2005, Garman worked as a Senior Political Analyst at Tendencias Consultoria Integrada, Brazil’s largest economic and political consulting firm. Prior, Garman held fellowships at Instituto de Estudos Economicos, Sociais e Politicos de Sao Paulo (IDESP), where he researched central bank politics in the region, and Centro de Estudos de Cultura Contemporanea (CEDEC), where he conducted field research on Brazilian federalism. He earned an MA in political science from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Garman has conducted extensive field research in Brazil, and has published articles in World Politics, Latin America Research Review, and the Brazilian Journal of Political Economy.
Francisco E. González is the Riordan Roett Senior Associate Professor of Latin American Studies at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Before joining Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington, D.C., González taught at Johns Hopkins SAIS in Bologna, Italy (2003-2005) and was a junior faculty member at the University of Oxford’s Department of Politics and International Relations in Great Britain (2000-2005). González was the recipient of a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship (2002-2005), which he served at Nuffield College, Oxford. Prior, he was a Lecturer in Politics at St. John’s College, Oxford (2000-2002).
González is the author of two books, both published by The Johns Hopkins University Press. Dual Transitions from Authoritarian Rule: Institutionalized Regimes in Chile and Mexico, 1970-2000, was named “Outstanding Academic Title of 2008” by Choice, the magazine for academic libraries. He published Creative Destruction? Economic Crises and Democracy in Latin America in the spring of 2012. González has appeared on CNN en Español, Voice of America, the Diane Rehm Show, and Al Jazeera International. He has testified in the U. S. Congress, in the House of Representatives, Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere twice: on China’s economic ties with Latin America (2008) and the Merida Initiative and other US aid to Mexico in the so-called “war on drugs” (2013).
Ben Smith is BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief. Since joining the company in January 2012, Smith has built a newsroom of over 450 reporters and editors, led expansion of over 20 content verticals, and built teams across the world. Under his leadership, BuzzFeed’s coverage has grown to include politics, business, investigative reporting, longform journalism, and entertainment while growing the site’s traffic to over 200M monthly unique visitors. Smith was called “one of the most talented and admired scoop-mongers in the game” by The New Republic, named one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People in Business,” and featured as Fortune’s “40 Under 40” for his work at BuzzFeed.
Prior to BuzzFeed, Smith was senior political writer for Politico from 2007 to 2011. Before Politico, he wrote a column and a blog for the New York Daily News, started New York’s first political blog, The Politicker, for the New York Observer, as well as the political site, Room Eight, after working as City Hall Bureau Chief for the New York Sun and as a stringer for the Wall Street Journal in Latvia. He has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Slate, The New York Post, and The New Republic.
Cliff Young is President of Ipsos Public Affairs in the United States, and also leads Ipsos global election and political polling risk practice. His research specialties include social and public opinion trends, crisis management, corporate and institution reputation, and election polling. Young is considered an expert on polling in emerging markets, as well as polling in adverse and hostile conditions, and has polled on over 100 elections around the world. He earned his BA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and did his graduate work at the University of Chicago (MA and PhD). Young trained in survey sampling at the University of Michigan and in political psychology at Stanford. He is also an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins SAIS and an instructor at both Columbia University SIPA and University of São Paulo, where he teaches courses on public opinion and election forecasting.
