Johns Hopkins SAIS names former White House and State Department official Shamila N. Chaudhary as Foreign Policy Institute Fellow

The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has named Shamila N. Chaudhary a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute (FPI).
 
“We are delighted to welcome Shamila Chaudhary as a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute,” said Carla Freeman, Executive Director of the Foreign Policy Institute. “Ms. Chaudhary brings deep policy experience and regional expertise to FPI. We look forward to working with her on a number of exciting initiatives that will provide new opportunities for the Johns Hopkins SAIS academic community to think innovatively about emerging international policy challenges.”
 
Chaudhary is Senior Advisor to Dean Vali Nasr at Johns Hopkins SAIS where she oversees special projects, communications, marketing, institutional planning, and strategic initiatives. She is also a Senior South Asia Fellow at the Washington D.C.-based New America think tank.
 
She has more than a decade of experience working in the U.S. government, most recently at the White House as Director for Pakistan and Afghanistan on the National Security Council from 2010 to 2011. Prior to her tenure at the White House, she served on the U.S. Department of State’s Policy Planning Staff, where she advised Secretary Hillary Clinton and the late Ambassador Richard Holbrooke on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Chaudhary served on the State Department’s Pakistan desk from 2007 to 2009, Indonesia desk from 2004 to 2007, and worked on democracy and governance issues at the U.S. Agency for International Development from 2000 to 2004. She also worked at the political risk firm Eurasia Group from 2011 to 2013.
 
Chaudhary is a foreign policy expert specializing in U.S. counterterrorism and national security issues, U.S.-Pakistan relations, Pakistan internal politics, and regional issues in South Asia. Chaudhary works closely with the legal community by providing expert witness testimony and briefs on asylum cases involving applicants from Pakistan.
 
She also writes on American socio-economic and political issues including immigration, civic engagement, refugee resettlement, and identity politics. Her work is regularly cited and published in Politico, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, and she has frequently appeared on CNN, BBC News America, NPR, Fox News, and other outlets.
 
Chaudhary earned an M.A. in International Affairs from the American University’s School of International Service and a B.A. in American Literature and Women’s Studies from the University of Toledo. She served twice on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Pakistan, and is a former term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an avid photographer whose work has been featured in The Washington Post, as well as local media outlets and galleries in Washington, D.C. Chaudhary is the co-editor of documentary photography book, UnPresidented: The Inauguration of Donald J. Trump and the People’s Response.
