Johns Hopkins SAIS students participate in community service projects on the National Mall

Students at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) are partnering with the National Park Service to beautify some of the nation’s most historic landmarks in Washington, D.C.

More than 250 students will participate in area beautification around the monuments and memorials of the National Mall on Friday, Sept. 2 as a part of their orientation. The school's second annual Day of Service also coincides with National Park Service’s yearlong celebration of its 100th anniversary.

“It is important for our students to have a commitment to the community beyond the classroom, and getting connected early sets a foundation for the rest of their time at Johns Hopkins SAIS,” said Khorey Baker, director of student life. “Throughout the year, students are able to participate in a plethora of service opportunities including activities with SAIS Corps community service club, our tutoring partnership with Garrison Elementary, and a number of resource drives organized by students.”  

This year’s beautification project continues the spirit of volunteerism at Johns Hopkins SAIS. Students have also assisted the Neighborhood Farm Initiative, D.C. Office on Aging, Washington Youth Garden, Capital Area Food Bank, Reading Partners, Rock Creek Conservancy, Ethiopian Community Center, Howard University Community Garden, Salvation Army, So Others Might Eat, National Park Service, and UDC’s Garden of the Senses.
