The Iran Nuclear Agreement: What Next?

U.S. President Donald Trump announced an immediate withdrawal from the landmark Iran nuclear deal, a decision Johns Hopkins SAIS experts said will threaten U.S. credibility, global stability, and ties with allies.

Majid Khadduri Professor of Middle East Studies and International Affairs Vali Nasr wrote in Axios that “rather than acting as the bulwark against dangers to world order, the U.S. is now seen as the country inflaming them” following U.S. withdrawal from the Iran agreement and the summit with North Korea. Adjunct Professor of Middle East Studies Sanam Vakil wrote in The Guardian that the “U.S. withdrawal creates a transatlantic divide at a time when cooperation between Washington and its European allies is critical.” Read more

Director of Strategic Studies Mara Karlin told The Washington Post that “if you want to ensure the Pentagon can actually plan and prepare and resource for a potential conflict with China or Russia, then getting into conflict with Iran and North Korea is the exact wrong thing to do.” Read more
