Madeleine Albright to Deliver Keynote Address at Hopkins-Nanjing Center 30th Anniversary

Washington and Nanjing—The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Nanjing University have announced former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as the American keynote speaker for the Hopkins-Nanjing Center's 30th Anniversary event, June 18, 2016, in Nanjing, China.
 
Albright will share her perspectives on the U.S.-China relationship and the immense impact of China's emergence as a world power since the HNC was founded in 1986.       
 
"The Johns Hopkins SAIS community is honored to welcome Secretary Albright as we commemorate 30 years of developing global leaders in China," said Dean Vali Nasr. "Secretary Albright's experience with Johns Hopkins SAIS goes back to her time as a student, and since then her accomplishments in diplomacy and global leadership are a testament to the type of professionals we aim to produce. In her years of leadership at the United Nations and the U.S. Department of State, Secretary Albright worked tirelessly to strengthen the ties between the United States and the international community. It is very fitting that she will join us to look back at the U.S.-China relationship and to reflect on the evolving roles each nation plays in world affairs. The Hopkins-Nanjing Center is the natural vantage point from which to analyze U.S.-China relations, given its pivotal role in opening our societies to closer cooperation," Nasr said.

Speaker Bio
 
Madeleine K. Albright is Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm, and Chair of Albright Capital Management LLC, an investment advisory firm focused on emerging markets. Dr. Albright was the 64th Secretary of State of the United States. In 1997, she was named the first female Secretary of State and became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. From 1993 to 1997, Dr. Albright served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was a member of the President’s Cabinet. She chairs the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and is a Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. Dr. Albright is also the president of the Truman Scholarship Foundation and a member of an advisory body, the U.S. Defense Department’s Defense Policy Board. In 2012, she was chosen by President Obama to receive the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of her contributions to international peace and democracy.

Established in 1986, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, located in Nanjing, China, is a graduate educational partnership between The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University, providing approximately 200 students from the United States, China, and other countries the unique opportunity to live and study international relations together. American and international students take the majority of their classes in Mandarin, while Chinese students study mostly in English.
